Introduction
For this module, I explored the digital divide in higher education. The digital divide is an enormous topic, reaching out from issues of age and socioeconomic status affecting technological ability, to geographical location affecting access to technology or information. For my presentation, I limited the scope. I interviewed a few doctoral students in the College of Education Language and Literacy department at a large research university in the Southeast to discuss the divide in ability and access. The results were certainly thought provoking and illuminated a number of issues present even at the highest levels of structured education.
Thanks to this assignment I learned a great deal about how educational technologists could help counsel teachers and students to effectively use technology to reach learning goals. Because access is not as much an issue as ability at some universities, I see the need for well-funded academic technology departments that can host informative events for the university community, provide training services to students and faculty, and actively approach instructors to provide assistance and encouragement (which is hard to do without adequate resources).
